3 things to remember if you’ll travel with your children

Planning a trip with your children is probably a lot of fun, but there may be some concerns when you think about how this will be affected by child custody. It’s critical that you take the time to learn about your responsibilities so you have an idea of what you should do.

One thing that’s important to remember is that you should start the planning process early. This gives you time to address any issues that may creep up without having to stress about making last-minute changes.

1. Check the parenting plan

The parenting plan will outline specific guidelines for vacations and travel. It may allow vacation plans to trump the regular parenting time schedule. There may be limitations for a geographical area where travel is permissible. It’s critical that you review all the terms that apply to travel and vacations so you can ensure compliance.

2. Notify your ex

In most cases, your ex will need to know about the travel plans. If you’re traveling internationally, you’ll need to obtain a notarized statement from your ex that clearly states that the child can travel internationally. You may also have to get a passport for your child, which has special requirements.

3. Plan for communication

Your child’s need to communicate with their other parent doesn’t stop just because you’re on vacation. Plan for ways to allow them to speak to each other and consider scheduling time with your ex so there’s an assurance that they’ll get to talk.

Anyone who’s just establishing a parenting plan should ensure they include applicable guidelines for vacation and travel. Working with someone who can assist with getting these set appropriately is critical.
