It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing our dear friend and colleague, Stephen K. Butler. We have all been deeply affected by this loss of our friend and resident land use expert. Steve was unfailingly kind and singularly brilliant. Although no one can fill Steve’s shoes, the firm is confident in Erin Carlstrom’s ability and enthusiasm to assume the duty of continuing his legacy.

Steve Butler was the head of the firm’s land use department. Prior to joining the firm in 1992, he was for many years the Chief Deputy and then Assistant Sonoma County Counsel in charge of the land use section. While there, he was responsible for the legal work in developing and implementing the County’s General Plan and Zoning Ordinance.

Since 1992, Mr. Butler represented national and local developers, ranchers, farmers, wineries and individuals in land use matters. He led teams of professionals in securing approvals for shopping centers, resorts, wineries, multi- and single-family residential projects, golf courses, surface mining operations and other business ventures.
